Convenience
A built-in microwave oven combo can save space on kitchen counters and add a sleek design to your space. Since it functions as a microwave in addition to a traditional oven, you can heat up leftovers, frozen foods and pre-packaged meals all in one appliance. It can eliminate the necessity for separate appliances for the countertop or large wall ovens. A microwave-microwave combination can also be a good option when you are looking to improve your kitchen without having to undergo any major remodeling projects.
Microwave ovens are available in a variety of different styles to fit the decor of your kitchen. Some microwave oven combos feature a swing-out right-to-left door, while others are drop-down designs that open the same way as traditional ovens. You can also purchase microwave ovens that open in a drawer, similar to cabinets. Microwave drawers can be easily accessible and are perfect for small spaces.
Combination microwaves are also equipped with a variety of features that help you prepare your meals faster and more practical. Certain models come with sensors that allow you to steam your food. This feature alters the temperature and time of your food automatically to ensure you get perfect steamed fish and vegetables. Other features include the broil element, which lets you quickly melt cheese and cook your favorite food. Crispwave(tm) in turn, can grill, bake, and crisp food items.
Consider how often you will use each feature when choosing a microwave oven combo. If you'll use the oven part of your combo more frequently than the microwave, you may be better off with a double wall oven instead. It's also important to note that a combo oven typically has less capacity than a traditional standalone oven.
When you've chosen the right microwave and oven combination to meet your needs, consider the installation procedure. Over- microwaves built in can be positioned over your cooktop or stove and connect to an electrical outlet, whereas built-in microwaves are inserted directly into the cabinets or walls of your kitchen. Some models even have trim kits that allow you to effortlessly integrate your new microwave into your kitchen cabinets.
Energy Efficiency
A built-in microwave oven combo is an ideal space-saving solution for those who have smaller kitchens, regardless of whether they are in a house or apartment. They can help save the space that would otherwise be occupied by separate appliances, and can also cut down on energy usage. They are more energy efficient than traditional wall ovens and provide a more efficient way to cook. In addition, they can be used to cook food and warm dishes, which reduces the necessity for additional appliances, such as toasters or warming plates.
In evaluating the possibility of amending energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses which include assessment of technology and market conditions screening analysis, engineering analysis, and a national impact analysis (NIA). In this SNOPR, DOE will draw on its existing engineering analysis on microwave ovens to determine what degree of efficiency improvement is feasible for this particular product.
In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave to an energy performance set of objectives. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.
As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the effects on consumers for each product category including lifecycle cost savings as well as simple payback time ("PBP"). DOE will utilize the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for microwavable ovens, to calculate the industry's net present value (NPV).
Manufacturer impacts will be evaluated also and DOE will use an updated version of its Industry Cash Flow model, which has been adapted for this type of product to calculate manufacturing NPV. DOE will also examine the impacts of these plans on small-scale businesses as well as other manufacturing subgroups to determine those who are likely to be affected.
DOE will also consider whether the test procedure for microwave ovens needs to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption and a possible integrated energy use measurement. Currently, test procedures only cover standby mode power consumption.
Design
Microwaves produce heat by causing water molecules to vibrate in food. Wall ovens are based on the circulation of hot air, while microwaves depend on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall ovens blend these two distinct appliances into a single unit that helps save kitchen space and provides an elegant, modern look. You must carefully consider your budget and goals before investing in a combination wall oven. Some of the combination ovens we rated have design or performance issues.
